It’s that time of year again – say hello to summer and our kids having a lot of free time on their hands!
As parents, we get to make sure they are getting the most out of their time at home. While we’re in the process of creating our own summer bucket list, we’ll also have plenty of time at home, especially because it’s where I work! In the two weeks we’ve had of summer already, we’ve fought off that whine monsters that want to come out. And ya’ll, there’s no way we’re spending a summer whining about boredom and complaining of screen time.
Most of our kids nowadays are tech junkies, they know more (in their minimal years of life) about phones, apps, computers and games than we will ever know. That being said, screen time is something that we want our kids to have but we also want them to spend their time doing other things. Insert our Ultimate Summer Chores Checklist and Activity List.
We created this list as a guide for our kiddos, it lets them know our expectations and gives them the ability to take ownership of their time, without being an overwhelming list of summer chores that will take away from the fun of summer, and in fact, will help them explore and enjoy it more! Before they get to that ever anticipated screen time, there are a few responsibilities and activities (and yes, summer chores) to check off the list.
THE BEST SUMMER CHORES CHECKLIST FOR YOUR FAMILY
You will see that the summer chores list has a few different sections. Some of the tasks are meant to teach them accountability and encourage them to help out around the house or help someone else with a task, others are there to push them to tap into their creativity, or to encourage them to be active.
I love that they’re exploring different options for staying busy and while my kids have been good readers, it’s an art that they haven’t been into as much lately. But with this list? Just this weekend Brayden told me that he had started a book to cross reading off the list, and then he liked it and didn’t want to stop reading. Totally a win-win.
We tried to cover everything, but I’d love to hear your thoughts on summer chores and activities!
For now, in our home, the kids know that once they’ve checked off their list they’ve earned their daily screen time, and I have something to refer them too when they feel the boredom whines coming on.
